Spiderman who?

A few things of note this week – principally though that I am now Spiderman’s dad. This is has definitely been the main thing for me.

That my eldest son, Tom has become a Peter.

Also, turns out that my phone is not broken after all. Who knew that the thing could ring so often and especially with such friendly media offers also. ‘Dom, we’d so love you on’ – or words to such effect. Doors that have been welded shut for a decade are now flying open it seems. And you will be pleased to read that I have said no – not as a sulk but because I have more dignity than to be a vicarious booking for my son. The only sofa on which I will be discussing Spiderman is my own.

And speaking of exploiting my son’s fame (something which is beneath me) brings me neatly to my ebook – how tom holland eclipsed his dad – available on kindle for £2.99 and at no good book shops.

Yesterday, variously I was advised to update the book to incorporate Tom’s life to include being selected for Spiderman. And you will be relieved to hear that I will not be doing this either.

This book was written when Tom had been spotted by fluke and ended up playing Billy Elliot in the West End and went from here to an LA premiere with the movie, The Impossible – whilst I went from the Royal Variety Show to touring village halls. So a warm hearted funny story about a son eclipsing his dad.

Obviously I had no idea what lay ahead for Tom but it doesn’t matter anyway because this story as a revelation ended where it needs to and this remains the case now.

As I say in the epilogue of the book…

“And here this story concludes. It will not be updated because from here-on-in, readers can decide for themselves to consume the careers of either of us; in cinemas the world over or in village halls mostly in England.”

So for those people fascinated by how Tom has managed to bag this iconic role – it’s all in here – but the explanation for my career remains more of a haze and still often wakes me with a start.

  1. Hi Dominic. Once again, congratulations on the success your son landing a major once in a lifetime role. Furthermore, I am SO incredibly happy that you very much care for your son’s happiness and that you were refreshingly brave to call out those who are trying to persue your own talents for all the wrong reasons. The entertainment industry in general are a bunch of hypocritical bigots but at the same time, they largely appeal to consumerism. You’re a lucky man that tries to keep things normal despite the fact next year, your family’s privacy could be intruded upon because of Tom’s new role.

I am glad you are doing what you are doing, whether it be just a dad looking out for his kids or your endless tales. Wishing you all good luck. Stay grounded as always.

  2. Hello. I just wondered about your blog, from Mays Landing NJ. I am on my way to work to make sure my little boy is fed and clothed. I’m writing to say I can’t imagine the joy you felt on this day way back in 2015. Vindication that through all the ups and downs of parenthood, you must’ve done something right. I want to retroactively congratulate your son for this accomplishment. I also want to congratulate you; I hope that I can help steer my children in a way that makes people understand their greatness and feel the joy that you must.
